Spanish
Spanish at Kingskerswell Primary School
Spanish is an engaging and meaningful part of the curriculum at Kingskerswell Church of England Primary School. Pupils begin their formal Spanish learning in Key Stage 2, from Year 3 to Year 6, following a carefully planned curriculum that builds knowledge, confidence and communication skills over time.
Through songs, games, stories, visual resources and practical activities, pupils develop their ability to listen, speak, read and write in Spanish. They begin with familiar words and simple phrases, gradually progressing towards asking and answering questions, expressing opinions, describing people and places, and using Spanish in a range of meaningful contexts. Regular retrieval and repetition help pupils strengthen their understanding and use previously learned language with increasing independence.
Our curriculum places particular emphasis on speaking and listening, while systematically developing phonics, pronunciation, vocabulary, reading and writing. Lessons are designed to make language accessible to all learners, with appropriate modelling, visual support, structured practice and opportunities for pupils to extend their learning.
A special feature of our Spanish provision is our connection with Jesús María San Agustín School in Orihuela, Spain, through the Escuelas Twin partnership. This provides opportunities for pupils to discover another school community and experience Spanish as a language for real communication. Year 6 pupils can take part in pen-pal exchanges, helping them use their language skills for an authentic purpose and develop an appreciation of different cultures and perspectives.
Through learning Spanish, pupils are encouraged to achieve by developing practical language skills, believe in their ability to communicate with others, and create by expressing their ideas, sharing learning and building connections beyond their own community.
At Kingskerswell, Spanish is more than learning words in another language. It is an opportunity to develop curiosity, confidence and an understanding of the wider world, helping pupils take their next steps towards a hopeful future.
